As the song says, June is bustin' out all over

That is the name of a song written by Rodgers and Hammerstein and from the musical "Carousel." The words of the song tell of the many things that happen in the month of June. June is one of the busiest times of the year for just about everyone.

Martha Stewart and I have different ideas

Once again the mailman has brought me a copy of Martha Stewart Weddings magazine. Every so often I receive a copy of this big, thick magazine advertising everything to plan a wedding and I have no idea why I keep receiving it. It contains 240 pages. I certainly have no plans to get married again.

The sighting of green brought joy in springtime

My son stopped in the other day after using the brush hog to do battle with a large patch of burdock in the pasture field. He remarked about how big it had already grown and how fast it was growing. It looks like we are going to have another great crop of weeds this year.

Touched by her hands

My Aunt Val has passed away. She lived a long life of 93 years in the small town of Harlem Springs. There are many people with many, many memories of her. Among the many that I have will always be the memory that her hands were seldom idle. She was always using them to work or to make something.

Taking in the beauty of a spring morning

What a beautiful spring morning! The sun is shining and a breeze is blowing. That should help to dry out those wet fields that the farmers have been waiting to get in to plant. No doubt there are a lot of tractors humming and some harness jingling as farmers head off to work.

Dairy farmers play lots of different games in a year

The one thing a dairy farmer never has time for is watching television game shows. Yet every day they participate in games like what we see on television. Men and women rise every morning to spin the "Wheel of Fortune" in dairy farming. There are no guarantees as to where the arrow will stop.

Farmers can, and do, contribute to high fashion

We have all been aware of the recent fashion trend of wearing "distressed" jeans. People pay high prices for jeans that are ripped, frayed and have holes in them. Numerous TV actors and movie stars show up on talk shows wearing them and especially seem to like the holes in the knees.

I haven't seen much corn planted yet here in Wayne County at the end of April, but that will change soon. Growers should make sure planters are adjusted to put corn in at a proper depth.

Taste makes eating a pleasurable experience

As I sit here this morning, I am drinking a cup of coffee that smells and tastes really good and eating a banana that doesn't taste good because it is a little too green. I am eating it anyway because it is a healthy food and good for me.
