Wayne County Junior Dairy Princess chosen

Laney Hunsberger, a Triway Junior High student and the daughter of Mike and Janice Hunsberger, was selected as the 2017 Wayne County Junior Dairy Princess during the annual Wayne-Ashland County Dairy Service Unit Annual meeting held in Wooster.

Dairy manure storage inventory survey results

In early January, the Wayne County Extension office in partnership with the Wayne County Farm Bureau, Wayne County SWCD and NRCS, the Wayne County Ag Success Team and the Wayne-Ashland Dairy Service Unit, mailed a survey to 339 Wayne County dairy farms to determine the current manure storage capacity on those farms.

Time to enroll in Holmes County 4-H

MILLERSBURG -- Now is the time to enroll youth in the Holmes County 4-H Program for 2017. Youth are able to join 4-H at any time; however, in order to participate in the 2017 Holmes County Fair, club enrollment must be received by April 15.

Greening up means spring nitrogen application

Wheat is greening up and starting to grow, which means that spring nitrogen can be applied as soon as field conditions permit. Research has shown no yield reduction as long as nitrogen is applied before Feekes growth stage 7, which is two visible nodes.

Pay attention to dairy cow stocking density

In a dairy free-stall barn, stocking density is most typically defined in terms of cows per stall or used as a percentage. For example, 1 cow/stall is equal to a 100 percent stocking density and 1.3 cows/stall is equal to a 130 percent stocking density.

Lot 1, Pine-Tree 9882 Gate 7345-ET, sold for $32,000 and was the top-selling consignment at the Ohio Holstein Convention Sale, which took place Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Holmes County Fairgrounds, Millersburg. The buyer was Gordon Lamb, Oakfield, N.Y.

Early season forage seeding considerations

I have been getting questions about seeding forages, both frost seeding and drilling, and this year's weather pattern needs to be considered when making a seeding decision. Generally, March is a good time in our area to consider frost seeding. Frost seeding works better some years than others.

Mother nature seems to be upset

My Thanksgiving cactus has beautiful white blooms on it. What is wrong with that? It is February! Thanksgiving was three months ago. There are several pretty yellow dandelions in my yard. I talked with a friend in the Columbus area and his crocus and daffodils were blooming.
