All season long, the West Holmes wrestling team has been led by its lightest wrestlers. Those two, Thane Kaufman and Cael Woods, will be the lone Knights heading to the state meet after qualifying out of districts Saturday.
Div. II Heath District
Kaufman, at 106 pounds, and 113-pounder Woods both recorded third-place finishes at Heath to secure spots in the state tourney next Thursday-Saturday at Ohio State.
Kaufman, a junior who lost in the semifinals in a 6-4 sudden victory by eventual champion Cole McComas of Beaver, dropped down to win his go-to match 5-3 and then posted a 13-5 major decision in his third-place bout.
Woods, a freshman, followed the same route. He lost his semifinal bout 7-2 to unbeaten Tim Young of Steubenville, but won his go-to match in the consolation bracket 8-2 and then secured his bronze finish with a 10-1 major decision in his third-place match.
Five other Knights participated in the district, with Jake Mullet going 2-2 at 195 and Josh Baldridge doing the same at 170.
Tyler Masters (120) and Alex Walker at 220 both went 1-2, while Walker Uhl (126) and Skyler Cline (160) both went 0-2.
