Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center hosted the 2016 Culinary Affair with Pork Cook-off on Feb. 10 with eight competing teams fielded by three schools, Normandy High School, Wayne County Schools Career Center and Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center. The timed competition was judged by professional chefs and food service personnel -- Melissa Bickel, pastry chef at Smuckers; Jeffrey Cecil, chef at the National Center for Hospitality Studies at Sullivan University, Louisville, Ky.; Nicole Crossman, dietary manager at Westview Healthy Living; Karie Dexter, dietary specialist at Westview Healthy Living; and Bradley Nash, general manager of Bob Evans, Wooster.
The culinary theme for the contest was "The American Truck Stop" and students added their individual presentations as each team whipped up menus of breaded pork cutlet, BLT tossed salad, creamy cheese and apricot grits, fresh buttered green beans and peanut butter cream pie.
First and second places in the contest were taken by Wayne County Schools Career Center teams while one Normandy team was in third place. The ACWHCC team of seniors Brian Fraley (Loudonville) and Jenna Woodruff (West Holmes) placed fifth.
